Outstanding!!!!
This camera is outstanding. This camera well excelled the Sony Cybershot range by miles!!!! The large screen, with its high resolution shows the photograhs which you have taken in the taken quality. You would not be disspointed. I got mine at Currys and i got a 2 GB memory card, a case and cover for 3 years for £200.

This camera is recommended 400%!!!

Not Outperformed

Excellent piece of kit!
Apart from having problems with delivery (camera went missing on a bfpo address), amazon refunded me and I bought the camera elsewhere due to lack of stock.
This camera has an instruction book that looks daunting however the camera is very easy to pick up and go. Photos are flawless and movie mode is good quality for a camera.
I also have a 2gb Kingston sd card from amazon which works perfectly so no complaints there.
The only complaint would be the software it seems very basic with no support for converting your movies to play on the camera, otherwise the camera is well up there with the +£200 cameras.
Highly recommended, buy one!

Memory Cards
I am really please with my Samsung i70 and have no problems using my 2GB Kingston SD card with it. i don't know if the previous reviewer had a faulty card or whether the camera doesn't take 4GB cards but it works fine with the 2GB version which gives me about 1000 images, enough for me!!! Great images, nice design and a great sceen. I would highly recommend.

Memory for this Camera
Be warned I bought a Kinston 4GB Memory and couldn't use it, and have wasted my money as I have had to buy a new memory card. No where do they tell you this but this camera will only take Toshiba, Panasonic or SanDisk Memory cards and only up to 2GB, otherwise the camera just doesn't turn on.

I haven't got to use my camera yet as it doesn't even come with a small Memory card when you buy it. I am waiting on my new memory card which hopefully should work.

The quality of the pics are fab. Macro from 1cm. Amazing. Face recon. Photo wise (2 pics in one). The only down side I do not have the codex to watch the movie (I did send an e-mail to Samsung. They don't care, no reply after 3 weeks.). You cannot watch your movie (downloaded or recorder on TV)???. My old Sony did it. MP3 is great. Movie Player is great, But you can only compress mpeg movies not AVI or IFO. Otherwise if you are an expert you will have to use at list 3 softwares to put a DVD to your camera. The quality is so good and the design so perfect. 2 year guaranty. Don't Hesitate to buy it if you are ready to read a thick instruction book to get the best of it. This camera has the WOW effect for a very very cheap price!!!

Very good camera, very good price...
Hi, firstly, this camera is very good quality for the price its up for, its got fantastic picture quality and lots of different modes to choose from for the more experienced photographer. however, if your not that 'tech-savvy', this camera is also great for you because its got and auto-mode which automatically selects the best settings for the conditions you are in. it has face recognition and best off all the automatic red-eye eraser; as soon as take a photo it gets rid of the red-eye all by itself in about 2-3 seconds flat, no messing around on the computer afterwards needed, however if you like you can turn this off. the only reason this isnt 5 STARS is because when taking a photo, you have to look at the screen to see what you are capturing, whereas i would prefer to look through the lense myself on occassions, nothing really big then. overall, a great camera for a great price for all levels of photographer.

Great Pocket Video Camera
The Ultra Series Flip Video is perfect for recording up to one hour worth of video. It is perfect for families who want to share videos. I found that the sound quality is ok. The zoom is adequate but not great. And the picture quality is good for its price. The better the lighting you have, the better the quality of the video taken. It even looks good when watched on a TV screen. No sense lugging around a camcorder when you can carry this very light and small video camera that fits in your shirt pocket.

Downloading the videos to a computer is simple and it keeps with some pre-loaded software, which makes it easy for you to edit, email, save, and make photos from the videos. The editing is very basic; it lets you trim some off the front and back of what you recorded. And it is set up to link right into You Tube. I was able to make a video just seconds after installing the batteries.

The Ultra Series Flip Video has the ability to be mounted on a tripod as well as an action mount that can both be bought separately. But the 1-hour of video is all it can hold, which is more than enough for me. It does not have the ability to have the memory upgraded.

Just to summarize this video camera is very light and easy to use. It is so easy to use that no instruction manual is necessary and I am not electronic savvy. It comes with all you need, including TV connector cable, carrying case, wrist strap and even the batteries. This is all you need to share video with your family at a low cost. (Amazon US US0)

Okay - Not Quite as Trendy as it Seems
I do like this solid state camcorder but it's neither exceptional value for money or versatile either. For kick off the quality of production is nothing exceltional, and by that I mean to compare with other similar priced products. To give some sort of idea what it is like, your mobile phone if it has the function for video would be similar if used on low res. That's not to say it's awful and clearly it's designed as an easy cheap youtube device, just don't expect too much. It's also big. Given that it's a solid state unit, it could be made a bit smaller, which would fit in with it's go anywhere utility advertising. Having said that, a large part of this is down to using standard AA batteries which is convenient. They seem to last a good long time compared to other products like this. The zoom is digital which does limit quality. The recording angle is a wee bit narrow as well, so don't expect any great indoor wide angle shots either. One thing that did bother me most of all is that there is no protective cover that closes over the clear plastic lens cover, meaning that any rough stuff, or grit in a pocket would cause a problem. There are many good points though. It's well made, comes with it's own flip out inbuilt USB A connection, so no extra wires, and I like the shape. Clean and simple. I guess in the end it would be exceptional value at 50 quid but at 100 it's perhaps a bit steep.

not all good news
the card and battery cover is worthy of a 10p toy very poor - worse still mine was deliverd with a fault - strong horz lines across the pictures and total over exposure in daylight. Let see how Canon respond this, one is scrap.

(Almost) Faultless
Bought this camera a year ago. The only niggle that I have is the lack of a battery meter. It is the best 'point and shoot' digital camera that I have used/owned. It is small and easy to use.

"unidentified image"
It would be worth your while doing an internet search for "unidentified image error message" before buying. Every result I came up with applied to Canon and their compatibility with SD cards. sadly, after I'd purchased.

great little camera
I bought this camera for my son (but I'm tempted to use it myself!).Great for pictures and also can take really good little videos....he enjoys shooting his own movies.We got a memory card and a case with it, but I only have praise for it and it really is very compact.Would find it hard to find a better camera for the price.

Fantastic compact camera
Bought this fantastic camera a couple of weeks ago to replace and old Nikon. First impressions were good, great size, fits nicely into a pocket, looks good and takes SD cards which I already have.
Worked straight out of the box with minimum of setting up, just had to install the software on my PC and I was up and running.
The picture quality is very good with the basic, automatic settings, haven't had chance to play around with them manually.
The main thing is it a nice easy camera to use and very compact.
I would highly recommend buying this camera and also a case to protect your new purchase.

Smashing camera!
I'm not going to bore everyone as its all been said 1000x before in the reviews but it DOES live up to the hype.

* Its very well made - reassuringly heavy.

* Its got a full auto mode as well as offering full control over ISO,
white balance, exposure etc to keep the pro's happy.

* Photos are awesome. The image stabilisation works well.

* Nice bonus is in-camera red eye removal

* The LCD is one of the nicest I've seen on a camera.

In short, if you're looking for a camera that offers more options and features and has a larger sensor & lens than a compact would offer, but you don't want to drag around a big heavy dSLR, this camera is for you! Go get one!

Wow
I love this camera - it has all the serious, grownup things like RAW shooting and manual settings for everything including ISO, focus bracketing and flash intensity, plus all the fun stuff like video (with options like time lapse and black & white) and "scene" settings.

I love the retro styling and matt finish too - it feels nice and solid in the hand. It's no pocket camera, but it's more discreet than a DSLR. All the controls are well positioned and have a solid, positive feel to them. Changes of setting show up on the big, bright screen and it's easy to alter them on the hoof.

The zoom is good, and the image stabilisation works well.

Did I mention I love this camera? I really love this camera.

Powershot G9
Just about everything has been said about the Canon G9 and there is not much that I can add to the recommendation for this camera especially as I have only had the camera a couple of weeks..and I am still putting it through its paces...I find there is nothing more pointless than a review which says..."I've had the camera for two days and it is brilliant"...only time and usage will tell ...but so far I find it more than satisfactory for my requirements....
This feedback is more about the excellent service provided by Amazon Itself..from whom I purchased the g9....I ordered at approx., 5.30pm one day..and with the express delivery service...my new toy arrived..Intact and well packaged.. before 9.45am the following day....very well done Amazon....thank you.

Best compact camera available
Don't buy this camera if you want something small and simple. Do buy it if you want a wide range of features and RAW format functionality.

I love my DSLRs and, like many amateur photographers (I suspect), I'm something of a control freak, which rules out my picking up a compact or point-and-shoot because I'm given little or no say in what I do. I also despise the long, long, long shutter lag and complete inability to shoot fast-moving objects or in low light. The other gripes common to *all* compacts - chromatic aberration, distortion, noise - would normally prevent me from buying a compact at all.

I've owned two: the Nikon Coolpix 5100 and the Canon G9, which I've used when I needed something small. I gave away the Nikon. I've kept the Canon. Below are the reasons why.

The G9 is solid, well-built (some might say `chunky') and only just qualifies (IMO) as a compact. It does have a tiny, but usable, optical viewfinder. If you have small hands, I would imagine the weight and no grip would make shooting one-handed difficult. If you have large paws like mine, the zoom dial is not easy to use. The Nikon is admittedly more ergonomic. I wonder why Canon bothered with an ISO dial on the top (nice touch, I confess), as only 80, 100 and 200 settings are of any use. There is the usual, pointless print button which is thankfully customisable. If you're used to recent Canon models, the interface and buttons are not too complex. Highly useful functions, such as changing the white balance, EV settings and focus modes are all easily accessible. The Nikon interface is quirky, bordering on irritating.

Both cameras feature a 12 million pixel count, resolution presumably being the only number camera manufacturers think we can understand. Noise in low light conditions or at anything above ISO 200 makes the Nikon useless, the Canon just about OK. (I admit I'm spoilt, being used to Canon and Nikon DSLRs.) If you want to take family snaps indoors, don't waste money on the Nikon.

The internal flash on the Nikon is poor and weak; it's only weak on the Canon. Both cameras have a hot-shoe for speedlite flashguns. My Canon 580 Mk II is twice the bulk of the G9, which doesn't improve handling.
I was struck by the sharp and vibrant colours of the Canon. In normal photo formats, chromatic aberration (colour fringing) and distortion were not noticeable - they can be corrected afterwards, if necessary. Neither offers an impressive zoom range, but the Canon's wide angle is a bare 30 mm (full-frame equivalent).

Video quality on the G9, I am told, is excellent.

After image quality and relative speed, the best feature on the G9 for me is the RAW format function. This is a godsend and one not offered by the Nikon, but even without it, the Canon G9 is simply a better camera.
Compacts don't really deserve their bad reputation. Trying to please everybody inevitably lowers overall quality, but the G9 tries hardest to achieve such an impossible goal. Does its wide range of features and improvement in image quality over other compacts justify the high price tag? If you're unfamiliar with the terms `white balance' and `RAW', then the answer is definitely no. If you're looking for the next step down from a DSLR, I would say yes.

Almost Perfect
I have a love/hate relationship with my G9 - well, actually I've had two of them. I noticed shortly after buying the first that there was a small dark dot appearing on the screen when I was previewing and taking video footage. It wan't there on photos, but that's due to Canon's clever dust spot reduction filtering.

Anyway, I deciced that I'd paid for a fully functional camera, even though I didn't plan to use the video capability, so I returned it to Amazon and they sent me a new unit - no questions asked. This time, I have only had the camera for a month, and shot only a few dozen images. It's always kept in a case, and never in dusty environments. However, looking closely into the lens element, I can see that it's already managed to gather particles of dust on the inside or the front lens, and the front of the inner lens.

This dust doesn't show up in pictures at this time, but it has to be noted, and I'm not the first one to do this by any means, that the dust accumultaion problem of the G9 is a real phenomenon. And there's no way to get rid of it once it's there. Could you take out the lens to clean it? Not practically. I've heard that it can be done, but you'd be a braver person than I, and I've taken some fiddly things apart in my time.

My guess is that the usable life of the camera will be greatly reduced because of this fatal flaw. Which is a great shame, because otherwise it's almost perfect.

It takes fantastic shots (especially in macro mode), has all the controls you will ever need in a compact, is solidly built, and a joy to use. Far more convenient to lugging around an SLR on holiday. This is why I bought mine.

Why oh why did Canon build such a great camera only to let it down by not sealing the lens unit properly?

Would I buy the G9 again? Probably, but then I bought this as a second camera, and can afford to replace it when it finally gives up the ghost. If this is your one and only camera, and you're going to be tearing out your hair at the thought of needing to replace it when the lens gets too dusty to use two or three years down the line, think carefully before purchasing.

Excellent Value for Money
OK, there are many, many more feature-packed cameras available.
OK, it's only capable of 6.1 megapixels
OK, it's not the most amazing at producing indoor shots without flash.
OK, you have to get expensive AF-S lenses to get auto-focus with this camera.

Well, forget all those things and buy this camera now. It's excellent. If you, like me, are looking for your first 'proper' camera (ie. an SLR), then, in my opinion, you need look no further than this wonderful piece of kit. It's just so much fun to use... it just feels so right -- good size, good weight, good picture quality, pretty fast, easy to use, nice 'idiot' mode, nice 'helper' pictures to remind you what the different settings do... it has the same (excellent) sensor as some of the more expensive models too, so that can't be bad.

Most of all though... you are getting a well-featured PROPER SLR CAMERA for about £250. It's an absolute bargain and I really can't tell you just how much better your photos will be if you buy one of these, read a few articles on photography, get a couple of books on the subject and just start shooting.

To summarise: buy this camera -- it's ace.

Nikon Gold
I will avoid a technical angle in this review as it has been admirably covered by previous buyers.
I took the plunge and bought this camera late Sunday night and received it early Tuesday morning, which is excellent.
The camera itself so far has been superb and gave me a superb days first shoot of 750 pictures.
I had been using a Coolpix for two years and have been amazed at what it could do, but the D40 is superb. A previous reviewer stated that I would be delighted at how well the wide angle lens works, and they were right.
I take a lot of action shots in Sports mode of myself and mates clay pigeon shooting, and on day 1 came home with action shots of shooters breaking clays. (these clays are on an Olympic Skeet layout, the birds are moving at 90mph, yet the camera caught the action perfectly).
I know I am going to love this camera more and more.
One tiny criticism though is the operators manual. It's crap. Obviously written by Nikon nerds who don't own a camera but who are software geeks. Thank God Amazon offer a digital guide to Nikons for well under a tenner/that's the next purchase.
I boughta 4GB card for the camera which give me 2,100 shots per day. Beat that. this is a great camera making a suoperb companion piece to my Coolpix and Nikon binoculars.

Great entry level DSLR for the novice.
Back in the early 80's a friend of mine got me into (sort of) serious photography and I purchased a Pentax MV SLR. The MV was great as it wasn't too compilcated as it had aperture priority and also AUTO mode.Suited me down to the ground.

Years went by and my MV was locked away and forgotten about.After I got married my wife had a Canon 35mm point and shoot which became the 'family' camera that was used for holidays, weddings etc. Just before the birth of our son in 2005 I wanted to get something special so I could take all the baby shots and as my experience with Pentax was great, I went with the Optio 5sn.

I was now entering the world of digital photography, and my love for photography albeit a novice one was rekindled.In time my wife's Canon had packed in and I know she had always had one eye on the Pentax Optio 5sn so I gave in to her and she now owns the Optio which is easy for her to carry.

So what now I thought. What about me? What camera shall I get?

Well the first thing I did (as always when I need help on deciding) was to go on Amazon to see what are the best sellers and to see all the reviews by you guys. The camera that stood out for me was the Fuji FiniPix S5700.It was a digital P+S had a traditional look and had great reviews.

Something told me though that if I went with that choice albeit a good one it's unlikely I would get another one for another few years at least. I had secretly been 'coveting' the Nikon D40, one because it was a SLR and secondly because it was a Nikon, a camera I had always wanted to own. I thought what the heck, bite the bullet.

I can't really say anymore than the positive reviews have already said, except it's phenomenal. I'm so pleased that I made this purchase and encourage anyone else venturing into photography to do the same.

As a side issue, it has not only satisfied my craving for SLR photography but I've also brought my old MV out as well, had it checked out, bought new batteries and a roll of 35mm and I'm using two cameras now.
