Very disappointing quality
Unfortunately my experience of this was not as positive as from previous reviewers. The first one only worked for 1 months and then froze, so I had to send it back to Amazon. Amazon was great in responding and quickly replacing the item! However the next was even worse - only lasted for a week, and also the same problem - froze! I had to ask for a full refund. Very disappointing quality from !

More style than substance, otherwise great
I bought this to replace my Creative Zen Jukebox, a chunkier but more robust mp3 player, so that's what I'm comparing it to.

In summary:

Pros:
- very small and light
- nice bright display and a good size
- cover flow (the ability to scroll through you albums by cover) is a nice touch
- the circular touch control is great for navigating very quickly through large lists
- Battery life is more than sufficient, allowing for more than 20 albums on a single charge (will be much less if you watch videos though)
- volume is sufficiently loud without being deafening

Cons:
- if your thumb is larger than a child's the controls can be awkward - when pressing the central button you'll often inadvertently touch the circular touch controls before pressing the menu button, so you'll annoyingly select the wrong item and have to go back a step.
- occasional file corruption - one of my songs cuts out before the end. This doesn't appear to be uncommon with nanos. I copied come music on a 2GB and it refused to play one particular song, whether ripped directly from CD or copied from a mp3 file on my PC.
- curruption with album art, some covers remain black, despite recopying, deleting and re-copying from my PC.
- the circular touch control is awkward to use when trying to scroll up or down a single item in the list because it's quite sensitive
- photo quality is not great (I suppose because it resizes them to fit)
- the supplied headphones are OK but not great, you can get a better pair for around 12 pounds (I wouldn't wear white ones anyway!)
- the default screensaver is the clock, but I can't find a way to change this to the `Now Playing' screen, I can't see why you can't cutomise this
- it has crashed twice in the space of a few days, forcing me to reset it. Not a good sign.

So it's not the most stable piece of kit, the controls can sometime be a pain but, as I expected with ipods, this is the sacrifice you make for something which packs so much in such a small space, and seems to be aimed at people who are more concerned about image than function.

Very pleased, I can't fault it
This is a really good little player. I especially like being able to use it in conjunction with my itrip, which means I can play my songs through any radio including the one in my car.

Wow - once again
I recently lost my beloved first generation at security in a Spanish airport so I decided it was time to treat myself to the present (third) generation and once again I have been blown away.

This model holds twice the music my old one did, and is capable of supporting video, photo and podcasts. The also benefits from a larger screen and more battery life, in order to enjoy your digital media to the full.

If you're familiar with and their iPods then this is an excellent addition to their tree.

Great
Really good. Plenty of memory for music with enough for some videos/pictures. Worth buying and is really portable. Easy to use and download onto so worth the money.

Awesome Piece of Kit
I have long been an fan (typing this on my Mac Mini and have no less than three iPods sitting on my desk) but this is something else.

Whilst most models only nudge forward incrementally throughout their lifespans the move to a 3rd generation has been a massive leap forward in terms of feaures, interface and pocektability.

First of all lets talk about the physical features. The is roughly credit card sized and can fit into your wallet as it is only 6.5mm thick. The touch wheel is perhaps a bit too sensitive compared to previous iPods but you get used to it. The matt black front is really nice and tactile whilst the back is the usual shiny chromed finish that will be scratched wihtin minutes of opening the box.

The 3rd gen is wider than previous version to accommodate the wider screen but don't let that put you off, it looks really nice and can be held in the palm of one hand easily.

The interface is really nice, the coverflow feature is my preferred way to flick through my music and as a previous reveiwer said, it takes a second for the album art to appear when browsing at high speed but hopefully a future software update will fix this.

There is a nice little search feature tucked away in there and the usual glut of games, alarms, contacts etc as well as a function to store and display photos.

For me the killer feature is the video playback, When the 2nd gen came out I thought, where's the video as I am sure many people did. For that reason alone I didn't go near it but the video on the 3rd gen is really good. Due to the dense pixels on the screen a well converted DVD looks the biz and plays smoothly without colour aberrations, jaggies or any flicker. Really good stuff and not something to be written of as a gimmick. Throw on a couple of movies and you have a good way to spend when on a long journey. I have watched a few full length movies and have not had any eye strain, a testament to the clarity of the small screen.

In conclusion I really can't rate this highly enough. It has replaced my shuffle as a permanent resident in my pocket. It goes with me everywhere and I use it everyday. Yeah, the packaged headphones aren't the best but when were they ever with an . Stick in a pair of Sennheiser or something and your sorted.

This is a deeply impressive incarnation of a superbly designed and wonderfully evolved device. In short it has everything I could wish for in such a compact size. Beautiful, beautiful piece of electronic genius.

Awesome
This is the best i have owned. once again it only gets 4 stars! ....................... want to know why??
because of the poor quality earphones you get with them.
spend over £120 for it and the earphones are awful. mine went straight in the bin, and i splashed out for the bose in-earphones. make such a difference.
other than that the mp3 player is top notch!!!! well recomended

A gem
My previous portable player was an Aiwa walkman, bought cheaply a decade ago in Singapore which chewed through batteries relentlessly and tended to jump on train journeys. Early reports of poor sound quality prejudiced me against iPods, but I was persuaded to give the a trial after the Aiwa gave up the ghost. What a revelation! Brilliant sound, great flexibility and enormous convenience: within two weeks I had downloaded the equivalent of about 100 albums (and have at last run out of memory - but I have the equivalent of 5.2 days of music).

Gripes? Not many. The click mechanism needs to be used carefully to avoid overrunning the item you want on the menu. You need a good memory to track down some items: artists and composers are initially listed alphabetically by first names (can be a problem). The use of the 'song' as the measure is rather irritating for classical music enthusiasts: if you want to buy something over c. 6 minutes in length on iTunes, you usually have to buy the entire album: annoying if you want only one work on the album. I had some initial problems organsing transfers from my CDs, but the absence of problems later suggests the fault was mine. I used the helpline once during that time, and received some useful advice from . And as many reviewers have commented, the headphones provided are not up to much - the Sennheisers recommended by many are excellent (and do not disturb others when used).

In short, a gem.

sleek, cool, brilliant
Bought this item about three months ago, and now find it indispensable. I use it everyday and have no problems with battery life, (I charge it approx once a week). I find it Very simple to use and to download media onto, and I'm a IT idiot. Very sleek, Very cool and Very brilliant.

8gb Black (3rd Gen)
Well, thought I'd add my review...my first on Amazon!

Anyway, before I begin, can I just say that I'm actually an -hater!!! I don't particularly like the brand for a number of reasons including the fact that they seem to be intent on fleecing you for every little extra, even though the price tag for their products is already high! For instance, why not include an FM radio on the ipods??? No, you'll have to buy that for extra!

Anyway, enough bashing. I've been trying to avoid buying an for a very long time, instead buying Creative Zen mp3 players, which I must admit I really recommend - great sound, decent looks and easy on the wallet. But as both my Creative players (zen and zen micro) have now developed faults, I gave up the hate for ipods and purchased a black 8gb...

...and boy, am I amazed by it!!! Quality build is great, looks stunning in the "flesh" and must admit the coverflow is simply great to look at! So even though I'm sort of still an -hater I thoroughly recommend getting an - either the or classic - you will not be disappointed!

Also, I was dreading itunes (based on some reviews) but after using Creative Media Source software before, I actually prefer the itunes software - very user friendly and great at sorting out your existing files - it just found all my files on the laptop and imported them in a matter of minutes!

An convert at last...even though I'm hating myself inside! ;-)

Non-Technical Review
The Good:
First things first - it is sexy. I bought a mirrored case which protects it well but I wanna have it so I can see it cos it does look great (although I will be devastated with the inevitable scratches!).

Space and speed really is impressive considering the size. Picture quality is awesome. Coverflow is pointless but cute for novelty value. I don't use the contacts or calendar so no comment on that. Sound quality is fab, with the right earphones.

The whole package of iTunes and the itself are super easy to use.

The Bad:
The click wheel is a bit slow to respond. I also think that the volume just isn't loud enough. It's okay for music in most circumstances (but not all) but for things like podcasts which aren't always great quality it just doesn't cut it for me and I have pretty good hearing. But saying that everyone complains about the headphones and they are a bit poop (I am currently choosing alternatives). But it is def significantly quieter than the older 30gb.

The Ugly:
I already told you - it is far from ugly - it is super sexy!

In conclusion ...
In my humble opinion, you can't get a better value for money mp3 player with regards to size, weight, quality, looks and reliability, I searched for a while as I hate to be persuaded by hype and have plenty of that. And ... Yeah mine has crashed a couple times but every bit of technology does from time to time - don't moan ... that is life!

Classic - serious audio
I've owned an 3G, U2, 5G and now a Classic. The 5G is significantly better in sound than the 3G, and the Classic is even better. The ability of it to play tunes and articulate detail easily matches audiophile cd players. BUT you can only hear this on decent 'phones, like the in-ear Etymotic ER4Ps - the earphones that come with the are rubbish. You need to spend at least as much as the itself on earphones to get what it's capable of.

I'm pleased with it...
I owned one of the old Mini's before this one and was looking to upgrade to this superior model.
I am extremely pleased with this indeed, and despite the cost, I'm glad that I invested in it. After all, I would rather a bit too much for an excellant product than anything on a product riddled with flaws.

The best
i was against getting an i pod for as long as i can remember. i always went for the cheaper mp3's finally after a particulary bad buy, in which i had to send it back, i was pesuaded by my family to get the i-pod 80GB. i colud not be happier with it. i have had it for about two weeks and, touch wood, i have had absolutly no problems with it!! getting music photos and videos onto it is very simple with i-tunes help, it does everything for you. if you get a video converter you can put every single video you could ever want onto it. the quality of sound is fantastic, the reason that people have had problems with the sound quality is that they have clearly not tried using different headphones. the capasity is encredable, i have 4 seasons, 7 films and about 20 home videos, aswell as 500 songs and all my 700 photos and i still have 60GB left!!

This is the best buy ever! the only advice i would give is make sure that you get a case for it because it does scratch easily. i've found a clear plastic one works perfectly as you can still see the stylish desighn and use all of the functions with ease!

good but not great
it certinaly does the job okay but it dosnt recognise my videos as they are im wmv format and it wont take them for some reason ,, also it does scuff quite easily even in my coat pocket the matte has gotten scuffd

but the video you get off itunes are first rate i was shocked at how clear and detailed the videos wear complex lighting effects were fantastic sound quality was also great it is easy to use as well so long as you have i tunes and a resonably well organised music collection
